Buxton Opera House Open Day Tours

Buxton Opera House is welcoming members of the public on Friday 13 September for free behind-the-scenes tours around its beautiful Grade II-listed Matcham Auditorium.

This is a rare opportunity for theatregoers to take a look behind-the-scenes at one of the few remaining theatres designed by celebrated theatre architect, Frank Matcham, and to explore the rich history of “the theatre in the hills”.

This is part of Buxton Opera House’s participation with Heritage Open Days, which this year celebrates the theme of routes, networks and connections.

Jonathan Thompson, Head of Operations and Deputy CEO expressed his delight with Buxton Opera House’s participation with Heritage Open Days this year:

“We’re really excited to be opening our doors once again for Heritage Open Days, sharing the heritage of our 121-year-old Matcham Auditorium with the public, where you will be able to explore the theatre and see some areas that the public do not normally get to see. By booking onto one of our free tours, you can experience the magic of standing on our main stage and seeing the stunning auditorium from a totally different view, one that is only normally for the performers.”

Audiences who book their tour in advance will have the chance to learn about the inner workings of the venue in the backstage areas, and dive into the fascinating archival story of Buxton Opera House in the Matcham Gallery.

There will also be the opportunity to find out more about the ongoing community projects that take place throughout the year, as well as volunteering roles and other ways that the members of the public can get involved in the Opera House’s exciting programme of events.

Buxton Opera House is also encouraging audiences and community members to share their memories of the iconic theatre through a new community initiative, The Archive, which is supported by Arts Council England. The Archive aims to rediscover, record and share local stories, photos and memorabilia from audiences and supporters of the Opera House throughout its 121-year history. Members of the public will be able to share their stories on the day with the team, who will be available to assist in the Entrance Foyer.

Tours are free but do require booking in advance due to limited capacity. Various time slots between 10am and 3pm are available to book now via the Buxton Opera House website and at the Box Office.

Audiences who are unable to pre-book are welcome to view the Matcham Auditorium from the Dress Circle (by entering via the Entrance Foyer), however they will be unable to receive the full benefit of the free Heritage Open Day tours.
