As part of the project Shaped by Stone you are invited to join artists Tom Baskeyfield and Mario Popham on a walk around Tegg’s Nose Country Park.
Over Millennia we have shaped stone: chipped, cut, split, crushed – turned hillsides into quarries – strata into streets. Like many other towns this process is the foundation of Macclesfield. The pink and blue-ish Gritstone of Tegg’s Nose has been quarried for hundreds of years. The hill exists as fragments around the town – scattered. It sits there in the walls, the facing of buildings and the lining of streets.
Through a dialogue between analogue processes – namely, large format photography, drawing (embossed rubbings), darkroom experimentation, writing, walking and talking – artists Tom Baskeyfield and Mario Popham aim to bring to the fore these layers of our shared history.
Join Tom and Mario, on the first of two Shaped by Stone walks which creatively explore the relationships between Tegg’s Nose quarry and Macclesfield Town Centre. During this walk, around Tegg’s Nose Country Park, we will be paying close attention to the landscape, sense of place and the physicality of stone. Following the walk you can visit the Shaped by Stone exhibition at the Visitor Centre to find out more about the project
The second walk around, Macclesfield Town Centre, takes place on the 25th of June and the exploration will continue as we drift through the streets of ‘old Macc’ where the essence of the hill, and those who worked with it, echo. There is also a partner exhibition at Jack Stevens, The Art Yard available to visit.
Please bring your own ‘tools’: Drawing materials, writing materials, cameras, sound recorders, whatever you’d like to use to create a response. Booking in advance is essential.
