Cheshire Constabulary has made the final of the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Awards 2014 in the category of ‘Sustainability and Environmental Impact′.
The awards showcase exceptional and inspirational facilities management and are the pinnacle of excellence in facilities management.
The Sustainability and Environmental Impact Award rewards the outstanding on-going delivery of sustainable and environmental initiatives.
Cheshire Police′s Head of Facilities Emma Marvell said: “We are delighted to have made it to the finals for the British Institute of Facilities Awards.
“The nomination means that the work we have been doing to reduce the carbon footprint of the Constabulary has been formally recognised.
“The awards will see the Constabulary going up against some large organisations from the business sector which is a testament to the dedication of our staff.
“We have managed to reduce carbon emissions by 22% over the past five years, avoiding costs equivalent to £1.6 million. Helping to protect the environment is helping us to protect frontline policing.”
The winner of Sustainability and Environmental Impact Award 2013 was the Peel Media Group and Cofely.
The Constabulary′s submission to the awards included a case study about a project undertaken to reduce costs when disposing of cannabis plants and other waste materials seized from cannabis farms.
This disposal process was costing the Constabulary around £36,000 per year but new ways of working have reduced costs to almost zero with some income being generated from recycled materials.
The new processes have removed the use of contractors and seen the introduction of designated stations across the country for waste disposal. If introduced nationally, the solution could save the country more than £2 million.
The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony in London in October.
