Speculation in the town says stuntman Gary Connery could be the mystery man spotted ‘flying’ in the skies by a stunned pilot.
But Gary, the man jumped out of a helicopter disguised as the Queen at the London Olympics opening ceremony, will neither confirm or deny the claims.
The 45-year-old sparked the rumours by discussing the story about a human UFO zipping past the side of a passenger jet at 3,500ft on Facebook.
He posted a link to the story, an exclusive in the Daily Mirror, and commented: “Haha, me in training for my very own www.stuntchallenge”.
Gary has been a stuntman for film and television for almost 20 years and worked on films such as James Bond, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Batman.
He has previously jumped from helicopters, planes and cliff-faces wearing a special ‘wing suit’ that allows him to fly through the air and land safely on the ground.
When contacted by the Macclesfield Express, Gary said: “Hundreds of people are talking about it being me but I’m not saying whether it was or not.
“It would be silly for me to admit it. But if it was it might have been training for an upcoming stunt.
“And it is an area that I have never flown over before; it’s a beautiful part of the world.”
Aviation experts admitted they were baffled by the sighting of the human UFO, who has been dubbed the ‘Superman of Macclesfield’.
He appeared from nowhere as the Airbus 320 passed above Broken Cross, and flying towards central Macclesfield, while it was coming in to land at Manchester Airport.
Gary added: “If it had been me I would go up in a paramotor or microlight as they don’t have a call sign number on them like planes or helicopters do, so you’re less likely to get caught.
“But for someone to do that jump they would have to jump out of something, and the person that flew them up there could lose their licence if they were found out.”
One of his all-action routines was seen all around the world after he acted as the stunt double for the Queen during the James Bond segment of London 2012’s Olympic opening ceremony.
Gary, who lives on Henley-on-Thames, added: “That was my proudest moment, flying in to what is essentially my home town to an audience of 1.4 billion people.”
Officials at the UK Airprox Board, which investigates near-misses in British airspace, said the mystery of what the pilots had seen may never be solved.
