Local MP, David Rutley, got involved in a bit of early spring cleaning this weekend, when he helped local charity SUSOparachute in a litter picking session in Macclesfield town centre.
David joined the litter pick after hearing about Patrick Murphy’s – one of SUSOparachute’s members – regular litter patrols. In November last year, David visited SUSOparachute a drop-in for adults with learning disabilities and additional needs in Macclesfield and the surrounding area. During a lively Question Time session, David was particularly impressed with dropper-inner Patrick Murphy’s contribution to the local community. To help keep the town looking clean and tidy, Patrick goes into town every weekend and spends several hours picking up litter. In fact David was so impressed, he asked to join Patrick on one of his litter picking expeditions.
SUSOparachute is run with and for adults with learning disabilities and additional needs. They pride themselves as a friendly, welcoming, affordable place in the town centre, to come and meet people, make friends, learn new skills or just sit and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.
SUSOparachute (www.maccsuso.org.uk), is on 25-27 Old Park Lane Macclesfield. To find out more about what SUSOparachute offers to drop-in or join their fantastic team of volunteers – just call in between 10.30 and 3.30 Monday to Thursday, ring Karen and Clare on 01625 424717 or emailinfo@maccsuso.org.uk – they would love to hear from you.
Asked about his litter patrols, Patrick said, “I don’t like it when the town looks messy. I like to help, it makes me happy”.
Speaking after the litter pick, David said, “It was good to lend a hand at one of Patrick’s litter picks, with other SUSOparachute members. Having previously met SUSOparachute in their much valued drop in centre, it was great to be able to support a different side of the work that they do, and also help make Macclesfield a cleaner, more attractive place. I would like to thank Patrick and everyone who helped to organise the litter pick, which is warmly appreciated by the local community.”
