Local MP, David Rutley, has written to Ross McEwan, Chief Executive of RBS, setting out his concerns and those of local residents following the bank’s decision to close its NatWest branch in Prestbury and the RBS branch in Park Green, Macclesfield.
David stressed the importance of ensuring that alternative arrangements are clearly set out for the full range of banking services to be made available to existing customers at the two branches. He has also asked for assurances to be given that no staff will be at risk of losing their jobs as a result of the planned closures.
Prestbury’s NatWest branch is an important part of the village’s heritage, which needs to be properly conserved. David is working with Cheshire East Cllr Paul Findlow and Arthur Dicken, Chairman of Prestbury Parish Council to ensure that RBS clearly explains its future plans for this important landmark, which the bank owns. He is also calling on RBS to exercise a duty of care for the building before any sale to ensure that it continues to be well maintained.
The Grade Two * building, known as the “Priest’s House”, dates back to 1448 and was the residence of the local vicar. It is a fine example of Tudor half-timbered architecture and the small balcony was used at certain times to conduct services. The unique building has been used as a bank since the 1920’s.
The local MP has also expressed his disappointment to RBS about the planned closure of its RBS branch in Park Green, Macclesfield. This decision is particularly sad given the ambitious plans to revitalise the Silk Quarter with a greater focus on the town’s rich silk-heritage and a refreshed retail offer, which includes Lidl’s interest in a new site.
David said, “It is disappointing to learn about RBS’s plans for the two branch closures. It is important for the bank to set out alternative arrangements for existing customers at the branches and to ensure that no jobs are at risk. This decision is also a spur to redouble efforts to regenerate Macclesfield’s Silk Quarter and to conserve Prestbury’s rich heritage. They are important priorities in both of the communities.”
