Macclesfield’s MP David Rutley, was involved in a cliffhanger of an event, when he took part in an abseil organised by the Macclesfield & Congleton World Scout Jamboree Contingent, at Tegg’s Nose Country Park, in Macclesfield.
The contingent, made up of seven local young people, held the event as part of their preparations for the Jamboree, taking place in Japan later in the year. In recognition of their hosts, the challenge was for a group to abseil the height of Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, at a staggering 3,776 metres.
In addition to the abseil, the unit ran a number of Japan related activities, including origami, a chop stick challenge, and a Japanese costume box. The event was supervised by the District Mountaineering Advisor, Steve Richmond.
The World Scout Jamboree is in its 23rd year, and attracts Scouting organisations from across the world, to meet in a spirit of friendship and unity.
As a keen mountaineer, and co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Mountaineering, the event was an opportunity for David to take part in one of his interests away from politics.
After completing his abseil David said, “It was great to be able to support this innovative event, ahead of the World Scout Jamboree. The World Scout Jamboree will be an incredible experience for the Macclesfield and Congleton contingent, and I am sure that they will be first rate ambassadors for our area and for scouting. I would like to thank everyone who helped to organise this abseil event.”
