A Macclesfield man who went to rescue his children who were being swept out to sea has died.
Jason North, 42, was caught by a notorious rip tide as he tried to reach the boy at the Three Cliffs Bay beauty spot at Gower, South Wales.
The children were saved by other people but Mr North, 42, was caught by a notorious rip tide.
Police said Mr North was on holiday with his wife and their two children, a boy and a girl.
His wife Rachel was celebrating her 40th birthday on the day of the tragedy on Saturday.
A police spokesman said: “It is believed Mr North entered the water, concerned that his children had got into difficulty.
“A number of people who were on the beach assisted in removing them from the water.”
But Mr North died in Morriston Hospital in Swansea later after being airlifted from the beach by an RAF helicopter
The police spokesman said: “His family are absolutely devastated.”
Lawrie Grove, lifeboat operations manager, said: “When we arrived CPR was already being performed on the man.
“There happened to be doctors on the beach who started it before the helimed arrived.
“We think he had gone in to help a child who was in trouble. The boy was pulled to shore by a surfer.
“It was an horrendous afternoon.
“The wave pattern at Three Cliffs is horrible. It is an awful bit of water, and we would recommend not going in at all.”
