Tributes are being paid to a long-serving councillor who died on Friday last week (July 31).
Peter Mason, of Cross Lane, Congleton, was 75 and served as a councillor for 24 years with spells on Cheshire East and the former Congleton Borough Council and Cheshire County Council. He was also a Congleton Town councillor up until 2011.
He had been re-elected to serve the Congleton East ward on Cheshire East Council in May this year and had been a Cabinet member for procurement from 2009-2012 and a Cabinet support member for finance between 2012 and 2014.
Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Councillor Peter Mason.
“He was a gentleman and a fine representative of Congleton and Cheshire East residents and I, and all of my Council colleagues and fellow members, will miss him greatly.
“Peter was an advocate of cleaner and greener energy and was a board member for our Fairerpower initiative. He was also a big football fan and was a keen supporter of Stoke City.
“On behalf of this Council, I offer my condolences to his wife, Helga and family.”
Peter first become a councillor in 1991 when he was elected to Congleton Borough Council before becoming a Cheshire County councillor in 1993, where he remained until 2009 when Cheshire East Council was formed.
He had a couple of spells on Congleton Town Council during the past 20 years and was the Conservative group leader on Congleton Borough Council for a period.
At Cheshire East, he was involved in the decision-making process for many major planning applications on the strategic planning board and also sat on the staffing committee
