Cheshire police work with Angling Trust and Environment Agency

Environment Agency staff have been targeting illegal fishing and fish theft, with the police targeting anti-social behavior and crime in rural communities.

During Operation Leviathan, high visibility patrols were conducted, trespassers removed from private land and a locking knife was seized from a man acting aggressively.

Katy Barton from the Environment Agency said;

This operation has been extremely well supported by the angling clubs and fishing community who were reassured by our presence. ”

Members of the rural community have commented on Cheshire Constabulary’s 100 days of Action Initiative with one member of the rural community saying;

“Coming from a farming family in Yorkshire, this type of police support would have been amazing over the years. Poachers cost us a lot of money over time. Well done guys”

And another commenting;

“I think it’s fabulous that you guys are involved in this…EVERY crime creates victims.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer reiterates his priority for Rural Crime saying;

“Crime affecting rural communities should never be underestimated and is why I have made it a priority in my Police & Crime Plan. Suspicious or unusual activity should never be ignored.”

Chief Inspector Heath, Rural Crime Lead says:

“We are specifically highlighting the good work our rural officers already do with this initiative to remind those living in rural areas that we’re not just here for our towns and cities; rural crime is just as important to us.

“Feedback from our fishing communities over Operation Leviathan has been greatly received. The actions taken by the Environment Agency against illegal fishing protects the industry as a whole. Law abiding fishermen have also appreciated the police presence and robust action against those causing ASB and illegal activity, which has been highlighted to us as a concern.

“Rural Crime has an impact not only on the individual but quite often the case, their livelihoods.”
