Riotous and very naughty – Lysistrata

Riotous and very naughty – Actors of Dionysus are back in Buxton with a revival of their eye-popping, trouser-dropping comedy, Lysistrata.

In a high octane, hugely enjoyable and bang up-to-date take on the Ancient Greek classic, follow the heroine Lysistrata and the women of Greece as they find a unique way to stop a bloody war – by denying their men pleasures in the bedroom! As tensions mount, frustrations erupts and certain pillars of the community reach bursting point as a battle of sexes ensues to restore peace to the land.

This production of Lysistrata is a David Stuttard adaptation (BBC Radio 4) which combines physical theatre, slapstick and circus to tell the ancient story. Actors of Dionysus  are internationally renowned for performing modern adaptations of Ancient Greek tragedies for over twenty-one years. Their latest production brings Aristophanes’ comedy of abstinence and excess bang-up-to-date.

Lysistrata is a comedy by Aristophanes originally performed in Classical Athens in 411 BC. It is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society.

Lysistrata takes place on Wednesday 24 February at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £15 and discounts are available. To buy tickets call Buxton Opera House box office on 01298 72190 or buy www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk
