Cheshire East targets visitor economy

Cheshire East Council has set out its plans to grow the Borough’s visitor economy to £1.08 billion – an increase of more than £200m – in their 2016-20 strategy.

The visitor economy strategy includes contributions to the economy, employment and the quality of life in the Borough.

The five-year plan links directly to the Council’s stated aim to have a strong and resilient economy. Through this activity the Council will support people to develop skills, while ensuring the Borough is a green and sustainable place where communities have a strong sense of civic pride.

The plans aim to see an increase in the sector from 10,851 to 14,648 jobs and are consistent with a sector that on average has been growing at seven per cent.

Councillor Rachel Bailey, the new Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “We are committed to enhancing and growing our visitor economy for the benefit of all our residents.

“We are very fortunate to have a strong variety in our visitor offer, with outstanding award-winning attractions, beautiful countryside and a rich heritage and culture, all of which can be easily accessed via two international airports and excellent road and rail links.”

The visitor economy in Cheshire East saw 48 per cent growth in the period 2009-2015 from £543m to £807m and the five-year-plan will build on the excellent growth in the region.
