Tomorrow, Saturday 18th June 2016, marks the start of National Neighbourhood Watch Week.
Neighbourhood Watch started in Mollington, Cheshire, in 1982 as ‘Home Watch’ – and has grown to become the country’s largest voluntary organisation.
In Cheshire there are currently over 1,700 community based, volunteer Coordinators, who are already registered with the national Neighbourhood Watch Network.
This year, Cheshire will join the rest of the country when it rebrands Home Watch to Neighbourhood Watch. Bringing Cheshire schemes into line with those nationally will ensure members receive the benefits of belonging to a larger organisation.
Neighbourhood and Home Watch Schemes exist so that neighbours can come together to make their community safer; each scheme having a volunteer Coordinator. Supported by the national Neighbourhood Watch Network and the police, schemes strive to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, provide reassurance, especially to those who are vulnerable, and encourage neighbourly and friendly communities.
