Step back in time to 19th century Vienna with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will return to Buxton Opera House on Saturday 20 August for a sumptuous programme of Strauss compositions. The concert follows their critically acclaimed residency at the beautiful Edwardian theatre last year.

Two generations of the Strauss family, steeped in tragedy and feuds, wrote beautiful and enduring melodies at a time of political chaos and upheaval. For Buxton’s summer night concert entitled The Last Waltz, prepare to be whisked away to this opulent world where the soundtrack and story is one of a society that danced and drank champagne, seemingly without a worry in the world.

Joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to enchant with stories of some of the best loved 19th Century music will be Classic FM presenter John Suchet. Musical direction and violin will come from the Leader of the orchestra James Clark, and features some of the most popular compositions from the Strauss dynasty, from the instantly recognisable Blue Danube Waltz to the jaunty and highly spirited Tritsch-Tratsch Polka. Tales from Vienna Woods recalls the folk music of the Vienna Woods, complete with a short flute cadenza evoking birdsong. Whilst the rousing and well-known Radetzky March, considered to be an unofficial Austrian national anthem, will fill our ears with the explosive and celebratory rhythms of the victorious Battle of Custoza, written in honour of Field Marshal Radetzky.

The Last Waltz – The Strauss Dynasty in Vienna will take place on Saturday 20 August at 7pm at Buxton Opera House. Tickets are priced from £15.50 to £32.50 and discounts for groups and Young Company members are available.
