Historian to play his part in Quarry Bank’s future

One of the country’s best-loved historians is to play a part in the future of a historic place in Wilmslow.

‘An Evening with Michael Wood’, the successful author and television presenter, will raise funds for the Quarry Bank Project on October 6.

Michael, who is originally from Moss Side, said: “It will be a real honour to speak to people at a place of such historical significance in the region in which I grew up.

“I know from filming here myself that Quarry Bank has a fascinating and nationally important story, so it seems a fitting venue for me to share some tales of my own about the challenges and joys of bringing history to life for television.”

Quarry Bank is one of world’s greatest heritage sites, showing how a complete industrial community lived in the 1800s.

The project will transform the way visitors experience Quarry Bank, helping recreate the compelling stories of the people who lived and worked at the mill 200 years ago.

Proceeds from Michael Wood’s talk, which will be a light-hearted look at some of his experiences over the years bringing history to the small screen, will go towards the £1.9million appeal for funding to help complete the project.

“The fact all proceeds from the event will go towards helping transform Quarry Bank for visitors is wonderful and I cannot wait to play my own part in its story,” he said.

Michael has been a regular face on TV screens for more than 30 years, making over 100 documentaries on subjects ranging from British Social History to the ancient world and international history.

Most recently he enthralled BBC2 viewers with ‘The Story of China’.

He is also the author of numerous best-selling history books including ‘In Search of Myths and Heroes’ and ‘The Domesday Quest’.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming Michael to Quarry Bank and are certain anyone who attends will be in for a fascinating evening,” said National Trust Fundraising Manager Sally Bowden.

Tickets for ‘An Evening With Michael Wood’ are £40 with a two-course dinner and a glass of wine or soft drink included in the price.

VIP tickets – which also include an invitation to pre-dinner drinks with Michael and a seat at his table for dinner – cost £50. After his talk Michael will take questions from the audience.
