Buxton Film is being funded by Film Hub North West Central to run a project to engage young people in the programming and marketing of films.
The project runs until March 2017 and will see a minimum of 10 films being selected for screening at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton, by groups of young programmers drawn from across the High Peak. There is no commercial cinema in the borough though a number of community cinemas screen a wide-range of films in halls in towns and villages.
Speaking for Buxton Film Keith Savage said, “We hope this project will draw people aged 16-25 into the work of developing audiences for film. Thanks to the funding we are able to work with Buxton Opera House and screen these films at the Pavilion Arts Centre in a comfortable and welcoming environment. The hope is that the project will help us build up groups of younger people who will then have a long-term interest in presenting films to wider audiences.”
Work has begun and the first four screenings have been announced. High Peak students Neve Robinson, Sam Griffin and Josh King said, “We’re passionate about films – they take you to different worlds and allow you to imagine yourself as part of them. We’ve chosen films with strong characters that you can identify with and with great soundtracks. These are four outstanding British films from the last 20 years – and we are glad to be celebrating British talent.”
The first four screenings, open to all, subject to certification guidance – start at 7.30pm – are as follows:
Trainspotting – Saturday 24 September
Shaun of the Dead – Wednesday 5 October
Billy Elliot – Wednesday 19 October
Withnail and I – Thursday 3 November
Tickets are £4.50 (£4 for concessions) and are available from Buxton Opera House Box Office. Call 01298 72190 or visit www.buxotnoperahouse.org.uk
