Russian State Ballet

The Russian State Ballet will be performing at Buxton Opera House in January, one of the most beautiful theatres in the country. The ballet stars will deliver two of the most popular ballet titles of all times – Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, accompanied by a live orchestra.

Formed in 1981, the Russian State Ballet of Siberia has quickly established itself an international reputation as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies. The soloists and corps de ballet never fail to mesmerise audiences with their breath-taking physical ability and dazzling costumes.

Swan Lake, considered the greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. The dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most technical challenges, as gloriously explored in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller Black Swan staring Natalie Portman. Odile, the temptress in black tulle, seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision, whilst Odette flutters with emotional intensity.

Perfect for families, the title of the most famous fantasy ballets goes to The Nutcracker. Beginning as night falls on Christmas Eve and icicles sparkle through the windows; the warm open fire crackles and sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. But when midnight strikes we are suddenly swept away into a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems; toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins…

If you haven’t already visited, Buxton Opera House is the stuff of fairy tales, considered to be one of the finest remaining Frank Matcham designed theatres in the country. Built in 1903, the Opera House boasts gold leaf decoration, cherubs, a coat of arms linked to Cavendish family (Chatsworth House) and exquisitely painted ceilings!
