The Rotary Club of Macclesfield Castle held a Jamboree last week, at Gawsworth Hall, in aid of Polio Eradication.
With support from Gawsworth Hall owners, the Richards family, the day started with a cream tea in the Tea Room – using donated ingredients – jam from Wilkins, tea from Typhoo, scones from Waitrose and Sainsbury’s – and cream and milk from Smith’s Dairy.
Visitors were entertained in the evening by the Houghton Weavers.
Polio remains endemic in three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Until poliovirus transmission is interrupted in these countries, all countries remain at risk of importation of polio, especially vulnerable countries with weak public health and immunization services and travel or trade links to endemic countries.
The proceeds from the Jamboree will be added to the international Global Polio Eradication Initiative which is a public-private partnership led by national governments with five core partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its goal is to eradicate polio worldwide.
