According to Sky Bet, Macclesfield Town manager John Askey is the new favourite for the managerial vacancy at Port Vale
The 52-year-old Stoke-on-Trent born boss has become something of a legend at Moss Rose after scoring 109 goals in 515 appearances for The Silkmen in 19 years with the club.
Askey started his playing career with Port Vale but failed to make a senior breakthrough at Vale Park. The latest odds provided by English Football League sponsors Sky Bet have the former striker listed as the favourite for a return to Vale Park to fill the club’s managerial vacancy.
Port Vale have gathered just five points from their opening nine league matches although their 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town on Saturday did haul the club out of the relegation zone. The club’s poor start to the season cost former manager Michael Brown his job last weekend.
In contrast, Macclesfield Town are performing well in The National League under Askey’s guidance.
The cash-strapped Silkmen are currently occupying eighth place in the league table while they were FA Trophy finalists last season.
Askey has won 42.4% of his matches in charge of the club in what is his second spell as manager at Moss Rose.
