Photographing the Peak District

Local artists are being hosted at Bakewell visitor centre this winter and will be showcasing work inspired by the Peak District National Park.

On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 November, visitors in Bakewell for the Christmas Market can call in at the centre to meet photographer Chris Gilbert, from 12noon until 2pm.

Chris will be signing copies of his latest book ‘Photographing the Peak District: A Photo Location and Visitor Guidebook’, which he co-wrote with Mick Ryan. Chris will be talking to visitors about the inspiration he finds in the Peak District landscape and explaining how to capture the best shots.

Chris Gilbert says: “The Peak District is where I learned to appreciate the countryside fully. It is a complex and varied place with bleak moorlands sitting in close proximity to chocolate box villages; crystal clear streams exuding from the reclaimed remains of centuries of industry. The amount of interest available to the photographer is staggering and it has been a privilege to be able to collect it together and to present it in this way to the visitor.”

On Saturday 2 December, water colour artist Sheila Gill will be at the visitor centre from 11am to 4pm.

Sheila specialises in painting quirky animals as well as landscapes and flowers.

Sheila explains some of her passions: “I’ve always loved gardening, and flower painting was a natural extension of this passion.

“The beauty of the Derbyshire landscape, particularly the White Peak, begs to be painted, and I spend a lot of time working outdoors.”

Both events promise to encourage people to look again at the Peak District National Park’s landscapes and discover their own inspirations.
