Tytherington School’s Student Parliament was joined by local MP David Rutley for a question-and-answer session, during last week’s UK Parliament Week.
The group of seven students, spanning years 7 to 11, asked David about a range of subjects on issues that matter to them. David also spoke about life as an MP, how Parliament works, and why it is important for young people to learn more about the democratic process.
UK Parliament Week is held annually and aims to increase awareness among young people about Parliament, the UK’s democratic institutions and active citizenship. It is organised by the Houses of Parliament’s Outreach and Engagement Service.
David is pleased that, this year, a number of Macclesfield schools and colleges took up the opportunities UK Parliament week presents. The Macclesfield constituency ranked fifth out of the six hundred and fifty Parliamentary constituencies for the most events organised for UK Parliament Week, with 18 different events taking place.
Speaking after his visit, David said, “It was good to meet with pupils from Tytherington School’s Student Parliament, to discuss how our democracy works, and to answer their well-considered questions. It is also great that so many local schools and colleges have organised events to mark UK Parliament Week. This is an invaluable way to help young people learn more about Parliament and our democratic traditions, and I hope yet more schools and colleges in and around Macclesfield will take part next year.”
