Macclesfield Town Hall is all set to be buzzing with the energy and ideas of local youngsters at the second Macclesfield Town Council Youth Summit.
The summit, being held on Thursday 8th March, is all about empowering local young people to discuss solutions to problems or issues in the town. The aim is for young people to be supported towards generating ideas which will benefit the area.
As a result of the first Macclesfield Youth Summit held in March 2017, several projects have been launched:
(1) A Macclesfield Pride event in July organised by Utopia. Utopia is a support organisation for local LGBT young people aged 15-19. The idea was first raised at last year’s youth summit and plans are now underway for this summer.
(2) After a group from Macclesfield Academy spoke at the event, Macclesfield Town Council introduced free youth street sports activities for 7-16 year-olds which take place at locations across the town every week.
At the inaugural youth summit, young people commented that there were not enough activities on offer outside school hours.
The new sessions are supervised activities with qualified sports coaches. They have proved popular with young people and have continued throughout the winter months and will go on throughout the year.
The outdoor events currently take place on Tuesdays (5.30-7.30 pm) at Jasmine Park MUGA, Broken Cross; on Wednesdays (5.30-7.30 pm) at Banbury Close Playing Fields; and on Thursdays (6-8 pm) at Macclesfield Academy.
Helena Gowler, community engagement officer for Macclesfield Town Council, commented: “Last year’s event was a real success with several fantastic projects being developed as a result of the get together.
“We hope that by holding the event again, we can keep the momentum going of listening to young people and supporting them to work on projects which positively contribute to Macclesfield.”
Young people aged 16-21 are encouraged to attend the Macclesfield Youth Summit where there will be free pizza on offer.
