Parliamentary procedure for Fallibroome students

Sixth formers from Fallibroome Academy in Macclesfield met recently with local MP, David Rutley, on a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

David joined the 18 sixth form students in the purpose-built Parliament Education Centre, and spoke with them about his work as an MP, how Parliament functions, and explained why it is important for people of all ages to engage with our democratic institutions. The students also asked David questions, both on national issues like the NHS, as well as on local priorities, such as the plans to regenerate Macclesfield town centre.

This was the first visit to Parliament by Fallibroome students taking the new A Level Politics course. Prior to their discussion with David, the students enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster, in which they visited the chambers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. They also took part in themed workshops, to help them learn more about the UK’s democratic processes and the role of Parliament.

David encourages schools in and around Macclesfield to visit Parliament and make use of the educational facilities available. There is more information on how schools can organise visits to the Palace of Westminster on the official UK Parliament website: www.parliament.uk/education/visit-parliament-with-your-school/

Speaking after Fallibroome’s visit, David said, “It was great to meet with the students from Fallibroome, and to answer their considered questions. I was impressed by the level of understanding that they demonstrated, and their interest in current affairs and what’s going on locally. I would encourage all local schools to see how they can encourage their pupils to take an interest in our democratic traditions with a visit to Parliament, and look forward to meeting with more school groups in the future.”
