Become a Young Ambassador – exciting opportunities at Macclesfield Museums for creative young people aged 14 to 24
As part of the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund Silk and the Jacquard Legacy project, Macclesfield Museums are looking for young people (between the ages of 14 and 24 years) to become Young Ambassadors to help create an exciting new programme of activities, events and displays within the museum; all aimed at young people and delivered by young people.
Macclesfield Museums want you to take ownership of your history and your collections. Tell them what you would like to see and do at the museum? Help them understand what the museum does well and what needs to be improved. Be part of the change.
Are you creative? Do you love gadgets and tech? Are you a writer? Do you have a flare for the dramatic? Or do you simply love history and museums? Why not use your skills and passion to develop and lead a creative workshop? Help re-interpret the Museum’s collections? Or create and deliver an exciting day event?
Macclesfield Museums want you to take the lead in planning, developing and delivering a program of summer activities. These could be a series of workshops, a large event, a display or a digital resource; it is completely up to you.
There will be further opportunities for training and a chance to go behind the scenes and discover the collections. This volunteer work can also go towards an Arts Award, Vinspired Award or equivalent. It will also give participants the valuable experience of working on a creative project in a museum setting and meeting new people.
It is anticipated that the group will meet on the last Saturday of the month, starting on 24th February, 11am – 2pm. Times may vary depending on group members’ availability, and additional days may be required during the summer when hosting the activities and events.

The Young Ambassadors scheme is just one aspect of the Silk & the Jacquard Legacy project, which will enable new and varied audiences to get involved and explore Macclesfield Museums’ collections.
Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, the project will look at Macclesfield’s heritage of creativity and how making remains relevant today, and provide science and technology based learning opportunities. This will include work around digital coding, design, and printing, using Jacquard weaving as inspiration and examining its influence on digital design and production today.
Project Officer Kathryn Warburton will research, digitally document, redisplay and interpret the Jacquard and block print collections, working with people from the community and volunteers to support this.
If you would be interested in getting involved in any way with the Silk & the Jacquard Legacy project, contact Kathryn: email projectofficer@silkmacclesfield.org.uk or call 01625 612045.
