Hill walkers light the way

Hill walkers wearing head torches have taken part in a special event this week that lit up the Hope Valley skyline along the Great Ridge in the Peak District National Park.

Some 600 volunteers formed a continuous two mile-long trail and the effect of all the head torches illuminated the sweeping curve of the Great Ridge.

The Great Ridge Light Night was organised by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) and the Camping and Caravanning Club, supported by staff from the Peak District National Park Authority, to promote the Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million appeal which is raising £1million to repair routes in Britain’s National Parks.

Two of the Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million projects are in the Peak District National Park – these are the Great Ridge, where the event took place, and the Cut Gate bridleway between Langsett and Howden Reservoirs.

Photographs of this unique event are now for sale to boost the appeal and are available on the BMC’s online shop.

The photographs help highlight the importance of protecting routes and aim to encourage more people to discover amazing outdoor places during National Camping and Caravanning Week (May 28 to June 3).
