At the height of summer the last thing you may want to do is consider the autumn. But this time of year sees the Autumn/Winter season brochure from Buxton Opera House – and there are some great shows to soften the blow of the nights gradually creeping in.
The Autumn/Winter season is always one of the biggest brochures and this year is no exception – with comedy, drama and dance, big names along with big productions are all here to carry you through the winter months.
One of the biggest productions this autumn is Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. This all-male comedy ballet has a fabulous sense of fun combined with flawless dance style. Commonly known as the Trocks, they have rejuvenated traditional ballet making it something fun (and fabulous) for all to enjoy. This is a unique chance to see this world famous troupe – you won’t want to miss them.
One of the UK’s most popular children’s writers has to be the all-round talented David Walliams, his stories have proved a great source for theatrical adaption. After the success of his Gangsta Granny in 2016, Awful Auntie will be appearing in Buxton as part of its premiere world tour. Stella Saxby, who is left as sole heir to Saxby Hall, is thrown into the path of danger when her awful Aunt Alberta will stop at nothing to get the loot from her. From award-winning West End producers this amazing tale is full of frights, fights and friendships and of course fun. This show will be a hit with little ones and young at heart adults too.
Another highly anticipated show is the thriller The Case of The Frightened Lady. From the mind of the king of detective thrillers Edgar Wallace, comes an investigation of a ruthless murder. Join Inspector Tanner as he discovers shocking secrets in his quest to unearth the culprit. This production has already enjoyed a highly successful tour, with its all-star cast including John Partridge (EastEnders), Scarlett Archer (Emmerdale) and Matt Barber (Downton Abbey).
With it being the Autumn/Winter season it wouldn’t be right not to mention this year’s pantomime, Dick Whittington. Buxton’s favourite Dame James Holmes (Clive from Miranda) will be returning as Dame Sarah starring alongside Gabrielle Green (CBBC Wolfblood) as Alice Fitzwarren, in this classic rags-to-riches tale. Expect our usual generous helping of Christmas magic and mayhem wrapped up in family-friendly mix of feel-good moments and songs.
