Is Macclesfield about to lose Mothercare?

Just as Macclesfield is offered a lifeline with the opening of TKMaxx – and the expansion of the Grosvenor Centre – Mothercare has confirmed it’s closing 60 stores across the country resulting in hundreds of job losses.

Back in May, the struggling company had initially earmarked 50 for closure, but has now extended the cull. The extra closures will come mainly from its Childrens World division, which will go into administration.

The company has not yet revealed which stores will close, but the Macclesfield store could be affected. Other local stores that could be hit include Stockport and Altrincham.

There’s a lesson here for those that backed the (several) Macclesfield Redevelopment Schemes – despite Stockport throwing £millions of public money at the problem – giving shoppers the same shops available in any other town doesn’t work!
