Keeping Chelford blooming

Chelford residents  are hoping to start a group – In Bloom – to help the community continue to look smart.

The idea, mooted by Chelford Together, is asking anyone interested to get in touch.

Group chairman Nigel Jehan said: “We have always been keen to make sure the areas around the community room look really special, and in past years have won awards from the Royal Horticultural Society It’s Your Neighbourhood Award.”

“We are having a breather from the competition this year, but still realise the benefits that attractive surroundings can have on neighbourhoods. Research by the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens showed that access to a garden or park or planted area had a great effect on a person’s mental and physical health, social interaction and social inclusion.”

“Gardening and gardens have a great impact on mental health, reducing stress and promoting feelings of happiness.

“Further research supports the finding that colours, scents, textures and sounds found in gardens and the seasons can be holistic, connecting people with nature and giving them a sense of time passing and things moving on. Chelford Together are really keen to get Chelford looking fantastic.”

As well as dealing with a busy watering schedule during the hot weather the group has also been planning and getting ready for its annual summer fair.

The weekly craft group, Crafty Fridays, have been busy making a variety of homemade jams, pickles and preserves made from the bumper crop this year, and volunteers are also busy making cakes for the event.

Lesley Jehan, a committee volunteer and cake maker and lover, said: “There’s nothing like a lovely piece of homemade cake rather than shop bought.”

Other stalls include a raffle, jewellery, ‘Everyone’s a Winner’ lucky dip and a Winner Takes it All luxury hamper.

Outside Chelford Community Hub there will be plants for sale, and there’s no need to worry about the weather as most of it is inside the Hub.

The summer fair is on Saturday at Chelford Community Hub, Elmstead Road, Chelford, from 2pm to 4pm. Admission is free.
