The A54 between Bosley crossroads and Buxton will be closed, near Wildboarclough, for 16 weeks to enable the upgrading of safety barriers.
The road will be closed while the work takes place – with the route shut to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
The stretch of road will be shut 24 hours a day from Monday July 30 until November.
A Cheshire East spokesman said: “There is no right time to undertake works on a busy road such as the A54 Buxton Road. We have planned this work to try to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and members of the travelling public. We recognise the works will be cause some disruption but we will do all we can to minimise the impact and would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
“The works must be carried out within a restricted time of year due to the seasonal weather and ecological constraints of the site. Work is expected to last for approximately 16 weeks during which time vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be unable to pass through the site.”
The council said a signed diversion will be in place at both the south (Bosley crossroads) and the north (junction A537/A54). Via A523, London Road, A537 Buxton New Road and A54 also operating in reverse.
