Rebirth of a local cinema

Wilmslow’s old art deco cinema, The Rex, is about to undergo a transformation – into a cinema!

Sophie Taylor, of the Rex Revival Group, said the on the Facebook page: “We are elated to finally announce that the Rex cinema is definitely returning! The new owners of The Rex cinema are the Mundin family, who so far have lovingly restored three cinemas in the UK.

“Of these, you will probably be most familiar with The Savoy in Heaton Moor, which we could only love more if it was in the Rex building! We have developed good relations with the Mundins, and couldn’t be happier that they are the people who are restoring the Rex. They are community-focused and have a passion for creating quality cinema experiences.”

Sophie thanked the group’s 4,000-strong membership for their loyal support and encouragement over the past 8 months.

She asked the group to “show your support for the Rex by signing up when membership opens, and using the cinema as much as you can, Let’s keep the cinema!”

The Mundins are a family of film enthusiasts who have so far rejuvenated three other cinemas in small towns across the UK, with the hope of restoring them to the heart of the community.

The family said: “We are delighted to announce that the Rex will re-open in the near future to bring cinema, and much more, back into the heart of Wilmslow!”

Work has already begun on turning the building into a two-screen, luxury, boutique, independent cinema – with a bar, luxury seating and sofas.

A spokesperson for the building’s new tenants said: “We are eternally grateful to the Rex Revival team who demonstrated the passion for cinema in Wilmslow and allowed us to conduct the lengthy and difficult negotiations with the belief that this new venture will be a huge success – thank you!”

They added: “It is too early to announce an opening date but we will keep you posted through social media and our website.”

Explaining some of the work that will go into re-opening the venue, they said: “The cinema is undergoing a dramatic transformation to bring you luxury, comfort, service and the latest technology.

“Our digital projection and 7.1 surround sound will create the perfect balance for a fully immersive cinema experience.

“When the lights go down and the curtains go up, you will be transported to another world.”

As for the films on offer, Wilmslow is promised the latest Hollywood blockbusters, independent films, thought provoking documentaries, weekend matinees for all the family, special senior screenings, as well as cult films and classics.

They will also be showing live satellite broadcasts from the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Opera House, Bolshoi Ballet and world class concerts from around the globe.

The spokesperson added: “We are installing a lift to our new foyer and bar area allowing access for wheel- chair users and a hearing loop and audio description will also be available.

“There will be a welcoming foyer cafe bar with sofas, armchairs, film books and magazines to flick through over coffee or wine.

“All the usual cinema treats will be available as well as a fully stocked bar with fine wine, craft beer, artisan gins, prosecco and homemade cake!”

Editor: now wouldn’t it make more sense for Macclesfield to consider the restoration of one of its old cinemas – rather than going the same expensive and futile route as every other town – redevelopment? The Picturedrome is just begging to be restored.
