For a hundred years since the end of the First World War, the hills of the High Peak have echoed with the sound of men singing in harmony. On the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, internationally renowned soprano Lesley Garrett and popular poet Ian McMillan join Chapel-en-le-Frith Male Voice Choir for A Century of Song, an evening of music making to celebrate the choir’s centenary.
Lesley – whose long established reputation both in opera, classical and popular song makes her a firm favourite with Buxton audiences – has a strong connection with the Opera House and the Buxton Festival. She will be singing a selection of well-known and popular songs from across the years and will join the choir as they celebrate this great achievement.
The evening is to be hosted by Ian McMillan – the Bard of Barnsley – whose unmistakable voice is frequently heard on the radio as the presenter of BBC Radio 3’s “The Verb” and whose poetry – often moving, wry and witty observations on life – is widely admired. Ian will be supported by multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer Luke Carver-Goss.
A Century of Song is at Buxton Opera House on Sunday 11 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £28 Discounts are available.
