Apply to join the Peak District National Park Authority

DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is inviting applications from individuals to join the Peak District National Park Authority, as Secretary of State members.

Eight secretary of State-appointed members sit alongside six parish councillors and 16 local authority councillors at the Authority, there are 30 members in total.

Authority members have an important role in overseeing the management of the National Park. Their specialist knowledge and insight is invaluable in providing leadership and strategic expertise to ensure the Authority delivers for national and local communities.
 
There are three Secretary of State vacancies on the Peak District National Park Authority, amongst 12 being sought across the UK by Defra.

Lord Gardiner of Kimble, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity, said: “I am looking for a wide range of passionate and committed individuals who want to help shape the strategic direction of our National Park Authorities and AONB Conservation Boards. As a Secretary of State appointed member, you will have the opportunity to help conserve and enhance our most treasured landscapes now and for future generations. I welcome applications from people who have a clear understanding of land management, rural communities, as well as protection and enhancement of the environment.”

Sarah Fowler, the Peak District National Park Authority’s chief executive, said: “This is an opportunity to make a real contribution to the Peak District National Park. I would like to invite people from a range of backgrounds to apply who want to play a leading role in conserving and enhancing the natural beauty and special qualities of this treasured landscape, and put it at the heart of how we think about the environment.”

Members devote between one and four days a month to Authority business, serving on committees or attending workshops or training. The posts are non-salaried, though members are given allowances.

The deadline for applications is 13 May and interviews will take place in June. The initial appointment will start on July 1 for up to four years, though this may be extended.
