A 42-year-old man from Liverpool who committed a robbery at a convenience store in Macclesfield has been jailed for more than four years.
Andrew Monaghan, of HMP Altcourse, and formally from Huyton, travelled to Macclesfield on Saturday 12 October where he entered the One Stop shop in Cross Street holding what appeared to be a wrench.
Monaghan threatened staff, repeatedly banged the tool against the counter and demanded that they opened the tills. He then forced the staff to take him to the safe before leaving the store with around £300.
Fortunately, a resident spotted Monaghan acting suspiciously in Gunco Lane where he was seen walking into a driveway before reappearing without his jacket.
The resident reported their concerns to Cheshire Police who later searched the area and found a snood that was thought to have been warn during the robbery. Police officers also found the tool – a track rod end from a car – thought to have been held by Monaghan during the robbery.
Forensic tests revealed that the snood contained traces of Monahan’s DNA and he was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
Monaghan appeared at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday 8 July where he pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to four years and three months in prison and ordered to pay a £181 victim surcharge.
