LATEST: The man wanted in connection with the assault, in Hurdsfield, has been arrested and conditionally bailed.
The assault took place sometime between 8.00pm and 10pm on Saturday 27 February. A teenage girl was with friends in the Hurdsfield area when she became separated from them.
A man, around 19 to 20 years of age befriended the girl and walked off with her to Tinkers Wood in Bollington where the assault took place.
Police describe the man as being white with a slight tan, slim build, brown hair with a fringe. He was wearing a dark coloured ‘Nike’ top, with a white Nike logo across the chest, and dark joggers with pockets to the right hand leg.
He possibly wore a silver chain or necklace and was wearing a dark coloured ‘snood’ style neck warmer and was riding a grey mountain bike.
DC Lee Ferris said: “We’ve made numerous enquiries into this incident and as part of our ongoing investigation, we have released a CCTV image of a man we believe may have vital information to help our investigation.
“I’d urge anyone who recognises him or had any information to contact us so they we can progress with our enquiries.
“I would also like to appeal directly to the man in the CCTV image to get in touch.”
