Construction work is nearing completion on the cancer care centre, The Christie at Macclesfield, which is aiming to welcome its first patient for treatment in December 2021.
When complete, The Christie at Macclesfield will be able to accommodate 46,000 patient visits a year and be capable of conducting 12,500 radiotherapy treatments and 6,800 chemotherapy and haematology treatments as well.
The two-storey building will house specialist examination rooms, counselling and complementary therapy rooms, and a CT simulator that will help with planning treatment.
The project is currently within its £26m budget, of which £3m will come from the NHS.
The Christie charity is currently trying to raise the remaining £23.
The building topped out in March. Since then, most of the windows, doors and internal partitions have been installed, roofing works are nearing completion and external cladding is being installed.
According to The Christie, the centre’s radiotherapy linear accelerator – a device that uses high-energy x-rays to destroy tumours – will be installed at the end of this month and a CT scanner is set to arrive in early September.
