Macclesfield optical team in the frame

To coincide with National Apprentice Week (6-12 February), Specsavers Macclesfield is encouraging locals to sign up to its apprenticeship scheme.

The Specsavers apprenticeship scheme is open to anyone from the age of 16 years old – including recent school and college leavers or those looking for a new challenge, regardless of age.  Training lasts for 13 months, with options including optical assistant, optical technician, spectacle maker, hearing aid dispenser and customer service.  The diverse range of apprenticeships even goes up to master’s degree level.

Leigh Steele, 37, started his hearing aid dispensing apprenticeship in October last year at De Montfort University, which involves completing assessments, weekly learning journals and one-to-one sessions with his apprenticeship coach, alongside his daily duties at the store in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre.

He began his Specsavers career in 2010 after completing a degree in archaeology and worked as a dispensing assistant at Specsavers Dunstable. Keen to return to his roots in Congleton, Leigh transferred to Specsavers Macclesfield as a hearing care assistant and quickly progressed to take on additional responsibilities including in-store trainer and health & safety officer.

Specsavers Macclesfield store director, Angharad Butler says, ‘Our apprenticeship programme has a great track record.  If you are a hard worker, willing to learn, punctual and ambitious, you will do well at Specsavers.  We’re currently on the look-out for applicants and are recruiting an optical assistant, lab technician and customer service apprentices.

‘Leigh is relishing the new challenge and we’re confident that this is just the start of greater things to come for him.’
