Macclesfield schools take part in World Book Day

House-builders, Bellway, has donated £200 to two local primary schools and invited children from both schools for a special reading of its new children’s book.

The donations from Bellway will be used by both Whirley Primary on Whirley Road and Broken Cross Academy on Parkett Heyes Road in Macclesfield to inspire and nurture a life-long love of reading by enhancing and updating the school libraries with new releases and replacing well used copies of much loved favourites.

A handful of eager readers from both schools, dressed in their World Book Day costumes, visited Bellway’s Weaver Green development, on Chelford Road, to receive the donation and be among the first to hear an excerpt from Belle and Brickle, Bellway’s new children’s story book that chronicles the adventures of a young girl and her hedgehog friend.

The children had a great time listening to the story which was read by sales advisor Chantelle, meeting the Bellway team and exploring the showhomes, one of which features a hedgehog-themed bedroom.  Each child was given a copy of the book, with extra copies being presented to the school teachers for the school libraries.

Reading lead at Broken Cross Primary School, Chelsea Stevens, commented: “We are so grateful to Bellway for its kind donation and will certainly put the funds to good use liaising with our pupils to choose new titles for our school library.  World Book Day is always an incredible day in school and it’s been great to bring a small group out to meet the Bellway team and hear the Belle and Brickle story for the first time.”

Headteacher at Whirley Primary, Amanda Edwards, added: “Reading for pleasure is widely acknowledged as the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success so we celebrate World Book Day every year to inspire and encourage a life-long love of reading, exploring new authors and genres and generally having fun in school through reading.  Coming to Weaver Green and listening to the Belle and Brickle story has been a wonderful experience for our pupils who can’t wait to go back and share these stories with their classmates.”

Sales director at Bellway Manchester, Grace Yarlett, added: “We are thrilled to be able to mark World Book Day by making a contribution towards new books for the libraries at both of our local schools and delighted to welcome the children to the development and introduce Belle and Brickle to them.”

A worldwide celebration of books and reading, World Book Day takes place annually in March in more than 100 countries around the globe encouraging children of all ages to come together to share the joy of reading for pleasure and the many long term educational benefits that creates.
