Plans to turn The British Flag into a residential dwelling, have been submitted by the pub’s landlord, Lloyd Roberts.
The former Robinsons hostelry on Coare Street. for many locals the heart of the community, became a freehouse in 2010 and has been run independently since. The pub has a long history, being constructed as a ginger beer brewery in the 1860s.
The local CAMRA branch has said the pub was open as recently as last week and had been fairly well attended in recent years.
Dave Gittins, chair of the group, said: “We’re not happy to see any pub shut, but the reality is that, in the current climate, they do. One pub less.
Dave lamented a dwindling number of small, traditional pubs in the area. “It’s a proper wet led pub,” he said. “There aren’t many of them left, unfortunately.”
The planned conversion has so far drawn just one objection, from a Brock Street resident, saying the plans would “add more congestion and parking problems” to the area.
Cheshire East’s Development Officer, for Strategic Housing, Chris Glover, has said he has no objection to the plans.
