A Cheshire Police officer has posted a warning, on social media, pointing out the dangers of travelling unprepared in winter.
“We have had a busy week dealing with weather related incidents, stranded motorists in snow, road closures due to snowfall and road traffic collisions.
“Tonight I have seen some of the best and worst behaviours when it comes to compliance with road closures. Before a road closure is implemented there are a few considerations and we along with partner agencies always try to avoid inconveniencing the wider community. However there are occasions where there is absolutely no option but to close a road. A prime example of this is:
“The road is completely blocked.
Accident investigation is required.
To allow emergency services to work safely at the scene.
The road conditions are so dangerous it becomes a public safety issue.
“This evening we have experienced a range of issues which have all been compounded by people travelling up to see the snow and getting stuck. Some were apologetic, whilst some had a total disregard for their own safety and ultimately needed to be rescued.
“Having engaged with over 50 vehicles, it was quite frustrating to see people exploring the snow in little more than tracksuit pants and a thin hoody. Then those who ran out of fuel needing assistance. This could quite quickly turn into a life threatening situation for those individuals.
“The vast majority of the demand could have been avoided if people drove sensibly and didn’t come out ill prepared for the conditions and respected the closures. The conditions have not improved and several roads remain closed.
“However as of 0330 we have been able to stand down some resources down. I am immensely grateful to Cheshire Search and Rescue for their assistance this evening, their support has been invaluable!”
