Robbie faces abuse at Workington

Robbie Savage reckons he came in for “unacceptable” abuse from drunken fans during the Silkmen’s 1-0 win over Workington on Saturday.

Savage used post-match interviews to remark on the stick he says he came in for at Workington Reds’ ground in the Northern Premier League Premier Division clash.

“I was in the boardroom before the game having photos with sponsors, with their fans, youngsters, signing autographs, all in great spirits,” Savage said.

“And then…unsavoury scenes.

“The abuse levelled at me throughout the game, to one point where there were individuals who I believe had a lot to drink hurling abuse at me from a yard away, being able to stay in that position for a considerable amount of time…it’s not acceptable.

“People expect me to take it. I do, and the best way you can have the last laugh is by scoring a 90th-minute winner.”

Savage, meanwhile, said he had plenty of respect for the officials at Workington.

“Workington, behind the scenes – good people, gave us a great welcome and we’ll give them a great welcome when they come here,” he added.

Macclesfield scored a 90th-minute goal to win the game in front of a 988 crowd.

Workington boss Mark Fell, meanwhile, had criticism for Savage and his colleagues for some of their actions on Saturday.

“I’ve been in the Northern Premier League for six years a manager and [never] had a club come to us with some of the behaviour that came from them,” he said in a post-match interview.

“They set up to warm up their squad players who weren’t in the squad to warm up in our half – I don’t know if that was to try and stop us doing our defensive warm-up or not – and then [they] moaned because we asked them to move into the other half.

“Robbie Savage has refused to shake hands with people. Have a little bit of class and dignity about it.

“They’ve ripped the pitch up in the warm-up doing the fast feet…

“Have a bit of humility. I’m really disappointed. People I’m sure will say I’m moaning because we got beat. But have a bit of respect for the team you come to.

“My focus is on how well our lads did today.”
