Spire Regency Hospital in Macclesfield has received the Autism Accreditation Inclusion Award from the National Autism Society.
The Inclusion award standards support provisions in addressing the specific barriers that autistic people often experience.
The hospital’s Autism Lead, Amie Bolt, worked tirelessly to ensure that all criteria was met in order to gain the award. Several considered actions were taken, including the development of an Autism Awareness Group, comprising autism champions across various departments, making reasonable adjustments for autistic people accessing services, such as allocating extra time and offering a quiet room when necessary.
Assessors for the award noted Spire Regency Hospital’s practice of using an autism/neurodiversity communication toolkit to help understand how each autistic patient prefers to communicate and to record their known triggers and calming methods. Also recognised was the hospital’s collaboration with a local autism charity, increasing autism awareness amongst staff and boosting local knowledge of other services to which they can signpost autistic people and their families.
