Local MP, David Rutley, went along to Macclesfield Library to highlight his favourite book and support National Libraries Day.
In an initiative for the nationwide celebrations on 6th February, David picked out Antony Beevor’s hugely acclaimed account of the Second World War, for a photo at the Library.
Macclesfield Library has taken part in the Reading Agencies’ #MyPublicLibrarycampaign, involving library customers and staff taking a photo of themselves with their favourite book which they have found on the library shelves. The photo is then shared on social media to raise awareness of National Libraries Day. Staff at Macclesfield have been sharing their photos on their Facebook page, and on the Cheshire East Libraries Twitter feed.
The annual event, which is now into its fifth year, is designed to promote the rich resources provided by our libraries, which can to be enjoyed and valued by the entire community. It is estimated that 265 million visits are made to libraries in the UK every year, and that a child who goes to the library is twice as likely to be a good reader.
Speaking at the Library, David said, “I am very pleased to be able to support our much valued libraries in an around Macclesfield. What a library has to offer has greatly changed and expanded in recent years, enabling them to become an even greater community resource. Reading is one the great joys that can be shared by us all, and I urge as many people as possible to visit their local library, take some time to pick up a book, and find out more about what our libraries have to offer.”
