The glorious National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is back in Buxton from 26 to 30 July with three brand new productions. Accompanied by a 24-strong Orchestra, the company will stage new versions of classic G&S operettas: The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and The Yeomen of the Guard.
The G&S Festival moved to Harrogate last year after over 20 years based in Buxton. With so many G&S fans still in Buxton, the week-long event gives those missing the Festival a week-long mini version. And there’s more! On Thursday evening (28 July), two favourite local societies – Derby G&S Company and Trent Opera will join forces under the baton of Andrew Nicklin to perform HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury.
Artistic Director, Ian Smith, said of their visit: “There is no doubt that summer sunshine, the beautiful Buxton Opera House and the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is simply a match made in heaven. Our visit last year was a resounding success and the entire company just cannot wait to return to our old stomping ground! We have a wonderful cast of the very best Gilbert & Sullivan players to be found anywhere and we just know this is going to be a very special week indeed.”
The Yeomen of the Guard directed by John Savournin kicks off the 2016 season on Tuesday 26 July (repeated again on Friday 29 July). Matinee and evening performances of The Pirates of Penzance are on Wednesday 27 July; HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury will be performed by Derby G&S Society and Trent Opera on Thursday 28 July and a hilarious, traditional production of The Mikado rounds off a magical week on Saturday 30 July.
Tickets for The G&S week are priced from £18. To buy tickets call Buxton Opera House Box Office – 01298 72190 or book online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk
