Buxton Opera House’s new autumn/winter what’s on brochure has arrived telling of theatre treats, as the nights start to close in.
Among the celebrity names joining us this season is Derren Brown, with his sell-out London show Underground (28th-30th August), a collection of Derren’s very best stage work. His illusions and magical genius is a thing to behold.
The August bank holiday sees the first Buxton Comedy Festival (31 August- 3 September). Event sponsors Thornbridge Brewery, will be quenching your thirst with real ales all weekend. Comedy big names include Jimmy Carr, The Kagools, Joel Dommett, Damian Kinglsey and Tanyalee Davis. The Lancashire Hotpots will give a night of ‘comedy music’ and there will also be a Comedy Club 4 Kids and the regular Buxton Buzz Comedy Club in situ. The theatre is also calling all ‘wannabe’ clowns to have a go themselves, during a clowning and improvisation Workshop!
Helping keep the kids happy over the summer is Dinosaur World (1-2 August) where intrepid explorers can journey across unchartered territories to discover prehistoric, remarkably life like, dinosaurs. Other children’s events include side splitting fun The Hunting of the Snark (12th November), and West End smash hit The Tiger Who Came to Tea (4-5 October). Also in October sees the return of Octoberfest (23-26 October) with a range of events for you to have a ghoulishly good time!
Of course Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the traditional Panto. This year Sleeping Beauty (9-31 December) invites you to help celebrate Princess Aurora’s 18th birthday. However, with grumpy fairy Maleficent missing an invite, she has other plans for Aurora. The usual laughter and fun follows in an action packed show.
The hit musical Hairspray (23-28 October) is guaranteed to have you dancing in the aisles! Featuring hits songs Welcome to the 60’s, You Can’t Stop The Beat and many more. Don’t miss this feel-good show. Other musical delights include Camelot (24-26 August) and the riotous comedy Spamalot (16-20 January 2018) sees King Arthur and his hapless Knights of the Round Table on a mission to find the Holy Grail.
Music to look forward to in Buxton includes Joe McElderry Saturday Night at the Movies (4th August) celebrating his fifth studio album, The Crooners (27 August) three very British suave British gentleman provide some tongue in-cheek laughs alongside big band swing. The UK number one show celebrating Johnny Cash’s music and life, The Johnny Cash Roadshow (6 August) boasts being the only show endorsed by the Cash Family. Also Westlife frontman Shane Filan, hot on the heels of his new album brings his Love Always Tour (29 September), and James Bond Concert Spectacular (20 August).
Drama raises its head in the form of Strictly Murder (10th -12th August) as English Couple Peter and Suzy’s isolated bliss is shattered by the arrival of a stranger from Peter’s past.
Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan (12 October) explores stereotypes and sacrifice in high society. Christmas themed drama also includes the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol (23 November).
The Russian State Ballet of Siberia will be delighting in the festive season with a spectacular trio, Cinderella (4th January 2018), The Snow Maiden (5th January 2018) and The Nutcracker (6th January 2018). The Russian State Opera also will return with resplendent performances of Puccini’s Tosca (25 September) andMadama Butterfly (26 September).
