The Mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Adam Schofield, attended the opening of a new Scouting Museum at Barnswood Scout Camp recently.
The camp is regularly used by Macclesfield Scouts and will provide youngsters with a unique opportunity to take a look at pieces of scouting history dating back to the 1920’s. It is unique in that it is the only scouting museum outside of Scout Headquarters, near London.
Macclesfield Town Council has supported the development and refurbishment of the museum with a community grant of £1,750. This grant enabled the installation of a new floor, storage cupboards and worktops for the memorabilia.
Mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Adam Schofield said ‘As a former Scout it was an honour for me to open the refurbished Scout museum, Scouting means so much to so many, including myself, and I am pleased that the Town Council was able to support this great project through the grants programme.”
Trevor Mackay, Scout District Chaplain and the Museum Curator commented that ‘The grant from Macclesfield Town Council has enabled us to secure a future for the museum and its precious memorabilia. The building has been professionally sealed so that the pieces of history can be fully protected from the Wildlife in the area. A small team of volunteers have worked endlessly for the last 12 months to make this happen. It is a real community project and we hope that people enjoy these memories for many years to come’.
Community groups and charities are encouraged to apply for grants from Macclesfield Town Council to support their local based projects. Grants of up to £2,000 are available and more information can be found on the Town Council website www.macclesfield-tc.gov.uk by calling 01625 374142 or emailing Community Engagement Officer Helena Gowler helena.gowler@macclesfield-tc.gov.uk
