PIVA in concert at Little Moreton Hall

On Thursday, 27^thJune, Little Moreton Hall, near Congleton, will be brought to life when Piva performs an evening concert in the stunning setting of the courtyard (weather permitting).  Piva will be well known to many visitors to the Hall as they have been playing there regularly for nearly 20 years.  The group specialises in music from the 16^thcentury playing on authentic reproductions of the instruments of the period, such as shawms, curtal, bagpipes, crumhorns, violin and recorders.  

Piva has developed this concert programme to reflect the broad range of music that would have been heard in Tudor London.  “Music was part of everyday life in the city”, explains Eric Moulder, the group’s director, “whether you were a visiting dignitary at court, watching a play at the theatre or simply visiting the local ale house. Londoners could also have listened in to the first ever public concerts which were performed by the city’s musicians every Sunday afternoon.” 

The concert covers music that would have appealed to all levels of Elizabethan society and the group is well known for their lively and engaging performances. “Looking at all the accounts of 16^thcentury London, it sounds like it was certainly the place to be – teeming with both locals and foreigners all wanting to be part of this vibrant city.  Much like today!” says Jane, who not only plays in Piva but also does much of the historical research behind the programme.  “I hope to be able to give the audience a flavour of what it would have been like – the good and the bad!”  

Since forming in 2002, Piva have established themselves as one of the country’s leading early music groups and they play throughout the UK and across Europe.  They have appeared played at various festivals and venues including The Greenwich International Early Music Festival, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Halsway Manor and Stafford Gatehouse Theatre.
