A long way from Cheshire we know, but next time you find yourself in South Devon – Salcombe in particular – don’t miss a visit to Overbeck’s.
National Trust owned, Overbeck’s Museum and Garden is an Edwardian house set in a seven acre garden.
The house is named after its last private owner, Otto Overbeck and on display are many of his inventions, stuffed animals, model sailing ships and a number of nautical and shipbuilding tools.
Whilst the house is fairly modest in proportions the extensive gardens, containing a host of exotic plants – and the views over Salcombe estuary are nothing short of breathtaking.
Allow two or three hours to see the garden and house and avoid high-season – unless you’re arriving on foot. Overbeck’s is approached by a narrow drive, which quickly becomes a single track road when early arrivers park their vehicles.
A tea room offers a variety of very reasonably priced snacks and some sensational cakes.
Special thanks to extremely helpful and friendly National Trust guide Chris – who, owing to us carrying a disabled passenger, allowed us to park right outside the entrance.
Our advice is go early, maybe take a picnic, but do leave room for one of the tea rooms scrumptious cakes!
