M6 congestion following bridge closure – motorists advised to avoid

At 5.20 a.m. this morning police were alerted to a report that pieces of concrete from a Bridge running over the M6 near Sandbach had fallen onto the carriageway.

Two vehicles travelling on the M6 were struck by pieces of concrete in the early hours of today (Thursday) by debris falling from Reynolds Lane Bridge.

One of them suffering a shattered windscreen and one of the drivers has suffered cuts and grazes to his face. He was examined by ambulance at the scene, but has been taken to hospital for a precautionary check up.

As a result the M6 has been closed between Junction 17  and Junction 16 on the Southbound carriageway while an inspection is carried out of the bridge.

The Northbound carriageway currently remains open.

As a result of the closure there is significant traffic congestion currently stretching back to Junction 19 of the M6 southbound – likely to worsen as rush hour continues. The roads in the surrounding areas are also heavily congested.

Reynolds Lane Bridge is also closed to traffic.
