The children of Cheshire-based Pott Shrigley Church School have recently been trained in First Aid via the British Heart Foundation’s HEARTSTART programme.
The first session involved the entire school and children were talked through responses and reactions to a number of accident or illness scenarios. Each child was taught how to put a patient into the recovery position correctly and safely following a child-friendly rhyme, how to check for a pulse and make an emergency call giving clear instructions as to the patient’s condition and full location details. A second session involved KS2 children who were taught, and practiced on the resuscitation dolls provided, effective CPR and the various adjustments required according to age.
Headteacher Ms Bromley commented ‘the children were absorbed by the scenarios and how to react, they all did brilliantly and listened carefully to this potentially life-saving information. I understand from parents they’ve been keen to practice putting family members into the recovery position which is great news’
