Around 300 cyclists were under starters’ orders from Member of Parliament for Macclesfield, David Rutley, and Bollington’s Mayor, Cllr Amanda Stott, at the Bollington Bikefest 2014 on Sunday morning.
The annual event, which is now into its third year, took place under dry skies and in ideal cycling conditions. David and Amanda Stott started all three of the rides, which were varying in length and difficulty, and began at Adelphi Mill on Grimshaw Lane.
The event was organised by Macclesfield & District Lions Club, with all proceeds going to local charities, including East Cheshire Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK. Last year’s event raised £5000, with event organisers hoping to raise a similar amount this year.
Cyclists were tested along three separate courses; a 12 mile family friendly course, a scenic 40 mile route and the challenging 75 mile long ‘Grimshaw Grueller’, before being rewarded by well-earned refreshments and a barbeque at the finish.
Speaking at the event, David said “It is great to see so many cyclists getting up early on a Sunday morning to take part in such a positive event. Cyclists are getting plenty of exercise, and are able to enjoy the beautiful Cheshire countryside, and at the same time, raise much needed funds for important charities. I would like to thank all those who have helped make the event such a success”.
